Sky High vs. Lash Idôle: which mascara, and when

I use both. Long and defined, or lifted and full?

My two mascaras, open on my counter: Lancôme Lash Idôle with its curved brush in my hand, and Maybelline Sky High with its thin, flexible brush

The short answer

You want them long and defined?
Use the Maybelline Sky High. It's my length mascara: long, separated lashes, coat after coat.
You want them lifted, open and full?
Use the Lancôme Lash Idôle. Its curved brush lifts from the root for that fanned-out, wide-open look.

I have two mascaras in my makeup bag, and they don't do the same thing. One gives me length, the other gives me lift. I choose depending on the look I want that day. Here's how I decide, in my own words.

How the 3 products compare, in Angie's words
Maybelline Sky HighLancôme Lash Idôle
What I use it forWhen I want my lashes to look much longer and defined. When I want my lashes lifted, open and fanned out, with volume.
How my lashes lookLong, defined and separated, with volume, and they never feel heavy.Lifted from the root, fuller and well separated, without looking overloaded.
The brushThin and flexible. It reaches even the smallest lashes, from root to tip.Curved. It lifts from the root and spreads the product evenly.
LayersI build it up in several coats for more intensity, and it still doesn't look overloaded. It gives me lift and volume without looking too loaded.

Every line above is my own observation on my own lashes, except where I say the brand claims it.

Angie's verdict

I don't pick one over the other. I pick the look.

For long, defined lashes, Sky High. The thin, flexible brush reaches every little lash, and I can build it up coat after coat without them looking heavy. And because mine is washable, it comes off easily at night.

For lifted, open lashes, Lash Idôle. The curved brush lifts from the root and fans my lashes out, so my eyes look more open, with volume that never looks overloaded.

If you only buy one

Ask yourself one thing: do you want your lashes longer, or lifted? If you want them long and defined, go for the Maybelline Sky High. If you want them lifted, open and full, go for the Lancôme Lash Idôle. That's why both of them made my picks.

The honest part

Both give me volume without feeling heavy, and both make my eyes stand out, so you can't go wrong. The difference is the brush, and that changes the look: the thin, flexible one goes for length, and the curved one goes for lift. Every eye and every lash line is different, so think about what you want to see in the mirror. And soon I'll add more mascaras I use, like my tarte ones, to this comparison.
